TITLE: THE CAPTIVE QUEEN

AUTHOR: ALISON WEIR

Review 1

A well researched historical book tracing the complicated life of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry Plantagenet.  The political background reflects the way in which France was originally divided into small nations each ruled by a king or duke and all of them at some time in conflict with one another.

Eleanor shows great courage and character throughout her long life.

Review 2

I found this novel more readable having just finished Alison Weir’s Eleanor of Aquitaine biography.  I was then able to distinguish fact from fiction.  Eleanor is a very fascinating figure from an era that generally does not ‘celebrate’ women/

My issues with the fiction revolves around the ‘myths’ about her relationships with men, and how the rather clichéd sex scenes impose upon the narrative.  I appreciate that an author is entitled to explore the ‘what ifs’ but at times Alison Weir embroidered these.  She always provides a balanced review of the reasons for this ‘embroidery’ and this is fair enough.

I was intrigued by the episodes that explored the relationships between Henry, Beckett and Eleanor.  This was well-balanced, I thought, and threw some light on such a complex set of relationships.

Review 3

A history book – not my usual choice of reading material but having enjoyed Innocent Traitor, I looked forward to reading this one.  I was not disappointed – in fact I couldn’t put it down.  Eleanor of Aquitaine’s life, love, family, fighting, exile – this book has it all.

Review 4

This is a good read with interesting sidelines in characters and history.  It all moves at a fair pace so I would recommend it.
